Free Movie Monday: October 30, 2017, Hoopla Halloween Double Feature

Welcome to Free Movie Monday, October 30, 2017. There are abundant free movies online that could be related to Halloween. But for some reason the vast majority of them have to be extremely evil, bloody and gory. That makes the task of finding family friendly Halloween movies a challenge. Even more challenging is finding family friendly titles that are actually entertaining. I considered Igor, which is available on Vudu for free, but my kids wouldn’t even sit through 5 minutes of it. Normally the movies are embedded in this post so that you can conveniently push play and enjoy it. But due to the lack of available titles which are related to Halloween, free, family friendly, (and for kids as promised last week), we had to turn to Hoopla this week. Videos on Hoopla cannot be embedded in a web page like other streaming services, but they can still be accessed for free online. In order to access videos on Hoopla you must have a library card from a participating library, which of course is free. Here are the two movies for the Hoopla Halloween Double Feature:

Watch The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad Free

This classic Disney production will create feelings of nostalgia for adults and entertain kids as well. The stories begin by opening a book, which is cliché in older Disney movies. Also, there are parts that will remind you of different rides at Disneyland, such as the Storybook Land Boat Ride, Toon Town and The Haunted Mansion. The weasels introduced in Mr. Toad were reused as supporting antagonists in other Disney productions and in the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). This is actually a double feature in itself since the stories of Mr. Toad and Ichabod Crane are completely separate and unrelated. For the purpose of Halloween, you could even skip past the story of Mr. Toad if you wanted. Ichabod Crane is based on The Legend of Sleepy Hallow, by American author Washington Irving. The story is narrated and partially sung by Bing Crosby. The music is a lot like a 1940’s radio show. As a kid’s show it is animated and mostly has a light tone until Ichabod is attacked by the headless horseman . . . whoo, ha, ha.

Watch The Adventures of Ichabod And Mr. Toad on Hoopla, available only until October 31, 2017 (but it could easily return to Hoopla another time)

Watch Mr. Boogedy Free

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is good for a younger crowd, about ages 3-8. But Mr. Boodedy is a good ghost story for kids about ages 8-13. This made-for-TV movie is also distributed by Disney, and it’s about a family that is moving to a new town to open a jokes and gags shop. From the moment they arrive to their new home they notice signs that the place might be haunted. You’d think they get a clue when a town native is constantly recommending that they move away. Notable stars are John Astin (Adam’s Family) and Benji Gregory (ALF).

Watch Mr. Boogedy for free on Hoopla.
